Acknowledgement
The generous support of the following funders enabled the successful conduct of the victim survey:
- Business Against Crime (Western Cape);
- the Hanns Seidel Foundation;
- the Royal Netherlands Embassy in South Africa; and
- the Open Society Foundation of South Africa.
In designing the questionnaire to include specific issues relevant to Cape Town, the following individuals made crucial inputs: Wilfried Scharf and Lillian Artz from the University of Cape Town's Institute of Criminology, Lukas Muntingh from NICRO, Gaynor Wasser from the Western Cape Anti-Crime Forum and Bob Mattes from the Public Opinion Surveys division, Institute for a Democratic South Africa (IDASA).
On 11 March 1998, a workshop was held at the Cape Town office of the Institute for Security Studies where key individuals dealing with crime and related issues in Cape Town, including representatives of the South African Police Service, were invited to a presentation of the initial findings of the data.* Their time and effort in assisting with the interpretation of the data are much appreciated.
In particular, the following contributions are acknowledged:
- Clare Hansmann and Aki Stavrou for their statistical support;
- Yasmeena Pandy for co-ordinating and supervising the fieldworkers; and
- Rape Crisis, Cape Town.
The survey was administered and processed by DRA Development in Durban, which also provided input into the interpretation of the findings and the methodology.
* See Appendix 1 for the list of invited participants.
