Edited by Jakkie Cilliers Greg Mills

From Peacekeeping to Complex Emergencies - Peace support missions in Africa, edited by Jakkie Cilliers and Greg Mills, jointly published by the South African Institute of International Affairs and the Institute for Security Studies, Johannesburg, July 1999.

Most, but not all the papers included in this volume are taken from a conference with the title ‘From Peacekeeping to Complex Emergencies: Peace Support Missions in Africa’ that was jointly hosted the SAIIA and the ISS held in Johannesburg on 25 March 1999. The various chapters reflect upon the theory and practice of peace missions in Africa including the thrust towards non-consensual peace missions, the use of UN observer missions, the role of smaller countries, ECOMOG as a case study, Ghana's experience as part of ECOMOG, the UN in Angola, and others. The various chapters are authored by Jakkie Cilliers, Greg Mills, Mark Malan, Theo Neethling, Chris Landsberg, Comfort Ero, Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, Eboe Hutchful, Philip Sibanda, Welile Nhlapo and Rocklyn Williams. The publication was sponsored by the Government of Sweden. 176 pages
