The generous support of the Open Society Foundation of South Africa, the United Nations Urban Management Programme (UMP) and the European Union (EU) made this study possible.

The Institute for Security Studies completed the study with the valuable contribution of several partners:
  • Lisa Vetten from the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) and Lillian Artz from the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cape Town assisted from the development of the questionnaire to analysis and documentation.

  • DRA Development in Durban administered and processed the survey. Aki Stavrou guided the methodology development and interpretation of findings. The following people, also with DRA, played an important part in the co-ordination of the field teams: Amanda Stavrou (Durban), Yasmeena Pandy (Cape Town) and Sandra Bollen (Johannesburg).

  • Clare Hansmann of the ISS managed the database, guided the analysis and responded willingly to endless requests for more data.

  • Several organisations from the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the Network on Violence Against Women and the Shelter movement took the time and resources to ensure that their clients would participate in this study. Without their support, the study would not have been possible.

  • Most importantly, the many women who agreed to participate in the survey, are acknowledged for their invaluable contributions.
