Ettienne Hennop, Jakkie Potgieter and Clare Jefferson
Ettienne Hennop joined the ISS in October 1998 as a researcher in the Arms Management Programme (AMP). A member of the SAPS for 13 years, he held the rank of Detective Inspector. During his career, he served with different sections of the SAPS. From 1993 until 1998, he served in the head office and Pretoria branch of the FIUs as an investigating officer and a firearms expert. He has successfully completed several courses in ballistics, the identification of firearms and ammunition, the testing of firearms for court purposes and the identification and handling of explosives.
Jakkie Potgieter is a senior researcher in AMP and the Head of the Africa Security Analysis Programme Situation Room. He joined the ISS in February 1996 as a senior field researcher for the Towards Collaborative Peace project. During 1995, he served as Senior Military Expert on the Disarmament and Conflict Resolution Project at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research in Geneva, where he undertook research and co-authored ten books and a number of policy papers on the disarming of warring parties during peace operations. He has also served for several years as an artillery officer. Apart from an army command and staff qualification, he holds a Bachelor degree in Political Science from the University of Stellenbosch.
Clare Jefferson has a Bachelor degree in Social Science from the University of Natal, with majors in Sociology and Human Geography. From December 1995 to June 1997, she was employed by Data Research Africa as an applied researcher and project manager, where she specialised in the quantitative design, computation and analysis of development indicators, as well as qualitative participatory research methods. In September 1998, she joined the ISS as researcher in AMP.
