National Workshop on Victim Empowerment and Support

29 and 30 August 1996, World Trade Centre, Kempton Park
Jointly presented by the South African Police Service RDP victim support programme, and the crime and policing policy project of the Institute for Defence Policy

Published in Monograph No 7: Putting Victims on the Agenda, November 1996

You are personally invited to attend a two-day consultative workshop to discuss new and exciting developments around victim empowerment and support in South Africa. The workshop, which hopes to involve all relevant stakeholders in an open-ended and transparent process, will discuss the following important issues:
  • international initiatives around victim support (Prof Jan van Dijk, president of the Ninth International World Symposium on Victimology, will give the keynote address);

  • the need for empowering and supporting victims of crime in South Africa;

  • identifying relevant stakeholders in the provision of victim support and empowerment, and their roles and responsibilities;

  • defining the scope of police involvement in victim support, as 'gatekeepers' to the criminal justice system;

  • the election of organisations and individuals to serve on a National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS) programme team on victim empowerment and support;

  • the functions of the programme team and its relationship with other stakeholders; and

  • the road ahead for victim empowerment and support in South Africa.
Should you have any relevant publications which you would like to include in the workshop folders, please contact the organisers.

Please notify us of any other national stakeholders whom you think may have a role to play in this process.

RSVP: Nicola Steyn at the IDP on (011) 315 7096 by Friday 23 August 1996.
