The ISS Crime Information Hub is mandated with the objective of operating as a trusted information gateway resource that:
- provides timely, objective and quality research and analysis on key issues affecting crime and the criminal justice system;
- monitors and reports on government’s response to crime; and develops practical solutions to prevent crime and alleviate blockages in the administration of justice.
It is in this regard that some of the main information hub products include GIS maps that can be used to chronicle crime trends and patterns. The use of maps is in line with the hub’s mandate of trying to package and deliver information in ways that makes it more accessible to the public. The idea is to present and/or link selected crime statistics and trends onto specifically designed geographical maps whose interface can be designed in such a way as to highlight the geographical spread of the statistics.
The maps include those that are focused on the following key crime categories:
- Murder
- Non-Violent Crime
- Violent Crime
- Residential Burglary
- House Burglary
Across the following selected regions - Pretoria, Johannesburg and South Africa.
The idea from all of the above is to create maps that can help us to portray, explain and package crime statistics and trends that are of pertinence to the public in such a way that empowers the public to be better informed about crime in such a way that enhances their ability to do something about it.
