Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality's Crime Reduction Strategy
Sibusiso Masuku and Traggy Maepa
The Open Society Foundation provided the funding that enabled the ISS to conduct the crime audit in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality, and provide technical assistance to develop the crime reduction strategy. The continued support of the OSF for local crime prevention in South Africa is appreciated.
The support, guidance and commitment of Councillor Biyana (Chairperson of the Standing Committee for Safety and Security) for the project is greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Maurice Mangena (Director: Safety and Security Business Unit), Noxolo Letta (Personal Assistant to Councillor Biyana), Nomsa Titi, and Tsepo Setenana for their assistance and support throughout the project.
Thanks to colleagues at the ISS who assisted in the project, including Eric Pelser who helped initiate the project and Antoinette Louw who assisted with data analysis and edited the final strategy document and the monograph.
Development Research Africa (DRA) assisted in the questionnaire design and conducted the victim survey in the NMMM, police and court service delivery surveys, and the youth focus groups. Lizette Meyer and Darryn Crowe undertook the matrix analysis of the focus group data. DRA also processed and analysed the data, and prepared useful input reports.
